Olympic gymnastics recap: final bars medals went to Suni Lee, Kaylia Nemour, and Qiu Qiyuan.

PARIS: At the 2024 Paris Olympics, American gymnast Suni Lee took home the bronze in the uneven bars final on Sunday. After team gold and all-around bronze at these Games, this is her third medal overall. In her specialty sport, uneven bars, Lee also took home a bronze medal at the most recent Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

In the uneven bars final, 17-year-old Kaylia Nemour of Algeria performed a stunning routine that earned her a massive 15.700 to win gold. The 17-year-old Qiu Qiyuan of China won silver with a 15.500.

The day’s first competition was the still rings final, when Liu Yang of China and Zou Jingyuan of Greece took home bronze and gold, respectively, to complete the podium. Closing the competition was the men’s vault final, where Carlos Edriel Yulo of the Philippines won gold, his second medal at these Games, ahead of Artur Davtyan of Armenia in silver and Harry Hepworth of Great Britain in bronze.

After winning gold in the vault final on Saturday, Simone Biles will be back on the competition floor on Monday for the floor exercise and balancing beam finals.

Throughout today’s individual finals, USA TODAY Sports will provide you with real-time scores, results, and highlights. Proceed with caution.

Why Suni Lee’s uneven bars bronze medal at the Olympics meant even more this time Suni Lee took home the gold medal for gymnastics’ all-around competition in Tokyo, which is the highest honor in the sport and, let’s face it, one of the most sought-after medals at the Olympics. Even more significant are the medals she has earned at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, including a bronze on uneven bars on Sunday.

“I’m rather pleased with myself. “It’s just been so much more amazing this time around,” remarked Lee, who also won bronze in the all-around final and gold in the team final with the U.S. women. It’s probably incredibly obnoxious that I keep saying “amazing,” but that’s basically all I have to say because it really is that good.

“I’m really happy with all of my performances, and it’s so much fun.”

Bronze goes to Suni Lee on uneven bars.

At the Olympics in Paris, Suni Lee is undefeated. In addition to the gold she shared with the American women in the team final and the bronze she earned in the all-around competition, Lee earned her second consecutive Olympic bronze medal on uneven bars on Sunday. On Monday, she will have the opportunity to add another one when she participates in the balancing beam final.

Lee completed her performance last, with the exception of a little step on her dismount. She appeared pleased with the routine, and her expression fell as the score of 14.8 was revealed. That put her barely ahead of the Olympic champion from Tokyo, Nina Derwael.

It seemed more like a heavyweight bout than an uneven bars final, and just placing on the podium was an accomplishment. All of the current Olympic, world, and European champions competed, and they gave it their all.

Gold is won by Kaylia Nemour on uneven bars.

The 17-year-old Kaylia Nemour of Algeria was waiting to depart when the results for Qiu Qiyuan of China were revealed. If that alarmed her, though, she didn’t show it. She added a tenth from qualifying, and her 7.2 difficulty score is one of the few in the women’s competition above 7. Despite the difficulty of her routine, she made it look easy. Like a hummingbird, she flits from bar to bar and lands without a twitch.

Nemour won gold with an incredible score of 15.700. After Nemour’s routine, Lee approached her to offer her congratulations. What a fitting conclusion.

On uneven bars, Qiu Qiyuan of China won silver.

Among the top competitors, Qiu Qiyuan of China, who took home the world title the previous year, performed a stunning dance. She appeared like a statue when performing handstands, and her pirouettes on the high bar would make ballerinas envious. When she was done, she was overjoyed, and when her score of 15.5 was shown, she started crying.

Uneven bars final results at 2024 Olympics

Here are the scores from the uneven bars final.

Medals for US gymnasts on uneven bars

Since 1992, American women have competed in this event and won medals in all but two Olympics. The years 2000 and 2012 were the sole exceptions. The most recent medallist, Lee, took home a bronze in Tokyo. Courtney Kupets (2004) and Shannon Miller (1992) earned bronze, while Madison Kocian (2016), Nastia Liukin (2008), Terin Humphrey (2004), and Amy Chow (1996) won silvers. Julianne McNamara was the only American woman to win a gold medal on uneven bars in 1984.

Philippines’ Carlos Edriel Yulo wins gold on vault

The Philippines came into the Paris Games having won one Olympic gold medal. Now Carlos Yulo has given his country two in two days. Yulo added gold on vault Sunday to the one he won on floor exercise Saturday. He finished with 15.116 points, ahead of Armenia’s Artur Davtyan, who earned silver with a 14.966 score and Britain’s Harry Hepworth, who got bronze with 14.949.

Though he wasn’t quite as overcome as he was during his floor workout, Yulo broke down in tears. He repeatedly touched his head, seemingly in shock, but then walked off the competition field, waving to the spectators and patting the Filipino flag on his chest. After Yulo won his first gold medal, gifts began to flood in. Among other things, he received $173,000, a condo that was completely furnished, tuition credits, and an endless supply of cookies. How much will he get for two golds?

These are the men’s vault final scores.

How Suni Lee’s disease altered her perspective

Soon after winning the gold in Tokyo, Suni Lee attended Auburn University because she wanted to compete at the NCAA level and have collegiate experience. She made her departure from Auburn at the conclusion of her second year known in November 2022. But Lee had a renal condition before the season could even finish, which made her retain so much fluid that there were days she couldn’t even put on her grips. After she moved back to Minneapolis, she started seeing physicians at the Mayo Clinic, where they identified that she had a second kidney disease.

And so began a nightmare that lasted almost a full year, with Lee constantly adjusting her meds and feeling helpless over her body. She said that she had gained forty pounds at one point. She had days when she could train and days when she could only perform specific tasks. Then there were the days when she was unable to move from her bed. By the end of February, Lee was back in the race. Although she only performed uneven bars and balancing beam at the Winter Cup and fell off both, it was a fortunate beginning that gave her confidence that she could still succeed.
